Structural Steel Products Corp (SSPC) was started on November 19, 1981 by Ray and Trudy Hales. The company was originally named H&H Suppliers and the initial sales model was to broker miscellaneous highway products to bridge builders in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.  As the business grew, it became difficult to maintain consistency in the quality of some of the products brokered due to vendor practices so the decision was made to buy one piece of equipment, hire one shop employee and rent a 2000 sq. ft. flex space. What started with an initial product line of bridge anchor bolts and concrete tie rods grew quickly and necessitated a move to a larger space in Raleigh and eventually into our current home in Clayton.  The move to Clayton in 1985, put us in a 6,000 sq. ft. building on a 2½ acre parcel. The larger building expanded our fabrication capabilities and we quickly doubled the size of the building to 12,000 sq.ft. which allowed us to produce nearly all of our own products, including large steel plate girders. The bridge fabrication business had begun.
In 1990, a decision was made to change the name to Structural Steel Products Corp (SSPC).  This name change better labeled the company and the sales model  that we continue to pursue today. Continuing to expand the market region to include Maryland, West Virginia, Georgia and DC at the request of contractors, Structural Steel Products Corporation fabricates material for projects from Maine to Florida.  Today, SSPC is proud to say we are an industry leading AISC certified fabrication facility for complex bridges with a fracture critical endorsement.

Today, our facilities comprise of four fabrication shops with more than 150,000 total sqft and a state of the art, 55,000 sqft coatings facility, Structural Coatings Inc.  All of this on more than 30+ acres in Clayton, NC. Combining that with our specialty hauling trucking company, The Hales Company, these three companies form The Hales Group.

The growth of our business from the garage as H&H Supplier to today’s The Hales Group has been the American dream and we are proud of who we are and where we are today.
